COMET robot machining consortium meets at Fraunhofer

The COMET project consortium was present at the 5th General Assembly meeting, held at the Fraunhofer IPA in Stuttgart, Germany from 24th – 25th November2011. Coordinated by Delcam, the COMET project is now in its second year, focusing on applying the previous year’s research and development on real-world machining tests, bringing manufacturing solutions that are cost-effective, flexible and reliable.

De toekomst van verspanen: robots!

In een Europees ‘Seventh Framework Programme’ wordt gewerkt aan het COMET-project: plug-and-produce COmponents and METhods for adaptive control of industrial robots. Een hele mond vol, maar het gaat hier om een aangepaste besturing voor industriële robots, zodat die ingezet kunnen worden als alternatief voor CNC-gestuurde verspaningsmachines.

Minder omspannen dankzij adaptief frezen

Normaal gesproken wil je tijdens het frezen exact de positie en geometrie van het werkstuk meten. Deze informatie is echter niet altijd beschikbaar. Adaptief frezen is dan noodzakelijk. Dit kan tot een hogere productiviteit leiden, omdat je minder vaak hoeft om te spannen en minder gaat luchtfrezen.

Europejska konferncja prasowa Delcam

Na początku czerwca odbyła się w Mediolanie europejska konferencja prasowa firmy Delcam. Oprócz prezentacji dotyczących działalności firmy i rozwoju produktów, zorganizowano wizytę w firmach Mazak i Sandvik, które na rynku włoskim bardzo ściśle współpracują z firmą Delcam. Od momentu powstania w 1977 roku Delcam stale zwiększa swoją obecność na rynku.

COMET consortium member Nikon Metrology helps transform industrial robots into precision machine tools

The EU co-funded COMET consortium is creating a revolutionary solution enabling the use of industrial robots for high-end machining. Robots of any brand fitted with the novel COMET plug-and-produce controller unit successfully respond to manufacturing industry needs for cost effective, flexible and reliable manufacturing solutions. Nikon Metrology is a main contractor developing an adaptive tracking system to detect deviations from the programmed robot path. These are used to initiate real-time tool path corrections in order to maintain the targeted accuracy throughout the entire machining sequence. The proposed solution will be on average 30% more cost effective than dedicated machine tools, while delivering absolute positional accuracy better than 50 micron.

COMET Technologies: Programming and Simulation Environment for Industrial Robots

The 30 month COMET project aims to overcome the challenges facing European manufacturing industries by developing innovative machining systems that are flexible, reliable and predictable with an average of 30% cost efficiency savings in comparison to machine tools. From a conceptual point of view, industrial robot technology could provide an excellent base for machining being both flexible and cost efficient. However, industrial robots lack absolute positioning accuracy, are unable to reject disturbances in terms of process forces and lack eliable programming and simulation tools to ensure the correct machining processes, once production commences. These three critical limitations currently prevent the use of robots in typical machining applications. In this article one of the four innovations for solving these limitations is investigated.

COMET Project Partner NISAFORM at Z-Messe, Leipzig, Germany

NISAFORM was present at Z-Messe with its own stand, between 1st and 4th of March, in Leipzig -Germany. Z-Messe is an independent subcontracting tradeshow targeting the automotive industry, machinery and plant construction and other industrial areas such as plastics technology and processing. The event was so popular that even Saxon’s Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Sven Morlok, visited the show.

Nikon Metrology will exhibit at Control 2011 in Stuttgart, Germany on May 3-6, in Hall 7 - Stand 7412

COMET Integrated Programming and Simulation Environment for Robots (PSIR) ready at SIR spa

Delcam visited SIR company for the installation of the COMET toolpath generation software - the PSIR module - on the COMET robot workcell. The first set of experimental milling tests was completed to engrave the SIR logo in a 260mm x 100mm x 100mm aluminium block. This is only the first step of a series of experiments designed to understand the robot machining basics and achieve best milling performances. COMET Robotic Workcell Setup at SIR spa

Italian COMET partner SIR has recently arranged a new robotic workcell dedicated to testing the new COMET technologies. The robot is an ABB IRB 6640, 185 kg payload and 2.8m reach, equipped by a PGN+300-2 gripper with a quick-change system by Schunk while the machining unit is composed by 8kW electro-spindle by FIMEC. The workcell set up has been designed with a modular strategy to test the next COMET technologies, from basic setup using only the path generation COMET PSIR software, to the complete configuration embedding the KDMIR robot signature, the ATIR optical tracking system and the HDCM compensation system. COMET Training

Co-ordinating partner Delcam plc held a PowerMILL Robot Interface training class from 10th – 13th January 2011. With a total of 14 participants from 10 partner companies based in 7 countries, the in-depth training workshop expanded on the PowerMILL Robot software familiarisation training held at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre in November 2010. Robot Installation at Delcam plc

Co-ordinating partner Delcam plc has recently installed a 6-axis ABB robot in its Advanced Manufacturing Facility to assist with its continued development of the integrated Programming and Simulation environment for Adaptive Robot Path Generation for machining with industrial robots (PSIR).
